Mothers Have Access to Higher Paying Scholarships and Grants Thanks to Obama’s Scholarship Program

“Scholarships for moms” is the catch phrase of 2009. Part of this has to do with President Obama’s initiative to get every American to commit to at least one year of higher education, especially the nation’s mothers. His American Recovery and Reinvestment Act supports this initiative by increasing funding to government grants and loans while opening eligibility requirements.

In the private sector, some colleges and universities offer scholarships to help mothers get into the classroom. The University of Toledo in Ohio is no exception.

UT provides three different scholarships that benefit mothers who are students. The University Women’s Club Non-Traditional Student Scholarship is awarded to low income women who are “non-traditional” and demonstrate academic achievement. Non-traditional usually refers to women who are over the age of 23 and/or are mothers at the time of enrolment. Women wanting to participate in this scholarship must be a sophomore at the time of application and must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

The Dr. Mary Louise Glen Scholarship Fund at UT is for non-traditional sociology students going into their sophomore year. These women must carry a GPA of 3.2. The Management Forum of Northwest Ohio offers scholarships for non-traditional UT students with a GPA of 2.0 or better.

Why is the University of Toledo focusing so much on mothers?

Ninety nine percent (99%) of women in America will work for pay at some time in their lives while 60.7% of these women will be mothers with children under the age of 3 when they work. Currently, women comprise 46% (almost half) of the nation’s workforce. Eighty percent (80%) of single parent families are headed by women yet only 22% make more than K a year. Ironically, over 80% of single mothers lack higher education, thus locking them into the poverty cycle.

Numbers like that are too hard to ignore. It’s time to break the poverty cycle. It’s time to get a college education.
